    Excavation Contractor in Pomfret, CT

Septic and well work, driveway building, and site preparation for Pomfret's rural and historic properties.

Pomfret is a rural town with long views, working land, and a lot of properties that have been in place a long time. Between Pomfret Center, Abington, and the roads that run out toward the state forest land, most of what we do here is on acreage: private septic systems, private wells, driveways measured in hundreds of feet, and site work on lots where the house was sited for the view rather than for easy access.

Older properties bring a particular kind of complication. Systems get replaced over decades and the records do not always keep up, so before we dig on an established Pomfret property we spend real effort finding out what is actually underground — where the existing septic components sit, where the well line runs, where past owners buried things. That is unglamorous work, and it is the difference between a clean job and an expensive surprise.

The second thing that defines excavation here is that a lot of Pomfret is beautiful specifically because of what is on it — stone walls, mature trees, open field edges, and long approaches. Work that damages those things to save a day is a bad trade. We plan equipment routes, staging, and stockpiles around what should stay, and we will say so if a proposed location for something means losing a feature you would rather keep.

Regionally, Northeast Connecticut ground gives you stony glacial till, ledge that appears without much warning, and low areas that hold water well past the last rain. On a large parcel that variation can happen within a couple hundred feet, which is exactly why a site walk beats a satellite estimate and why we do not price a job we have not stood on.

    Septic work on established properties

Septic replacement is the most common major excavation project on rural Pomfret property. The work involves excavating the tank and field areas, setting the tank, installing the distribution and line work, stoning and covering the field, and restoring the surface. Layout has to respect setbacks from the well, the house, the property lines, and wet areas, and it has to leave a reserve area intact for the next system.

Permits and health district approval are typically required for septic installation and replacement, and we coordinate those approvals and the inspection sequence with the designer as part of the job.

    Driveways with distance and grade

A quarter-mile driveway is a small road, and it needs to be built like one: stripped to competent subgrade, built up in compacted lifts, crowned to shed water, and cut with culverts and swales wherever water wants to cross. On grade, we pay particular attention to shoulders, since a steep drive with unsupported edges will lose them to runoff within a few seasons. Where a wall makes sense to hold a slope or gain width, we can build that as part of the same job.
