Putnam is the most built-up town we regularly work in, and that changes the job. Downtown and the neighborhoods around it are closer-set than the surrounding countryside, lots are smaller, the Quinebaug River runs through the middle of it, and a good number of properties are older housing stock with drainage that was designed for a different century. Excavation in that environment is less about opening up acreage and more about doing precise work in confined space without damaging anything around it.

Access planning is most of the battle. On an in-town lot there may be one way in, a neighbor's fence three feet off the line, a paved apron you do not want to tear up, and a mature tree you have to protect. We size the machine to the opening, plan where spoil gets stockpiled, lay down protection over anything that stays, and stage material so trucks are not blocking the street longer than necessary. On tight sites we would rather bring a smaller machine and take an extra day than force a big one in and cause damage.

The single most common Putnam call is water where it should not be. Wet basements, a yard that will not dry out, a downspout that has been dumping against a foundation for twenty years, or a low corner that turns into a pond every March. Those are solvable problems, but the solution is almost never one product — it is regrading so the ground falls away from the house, excavating and installing footing or curtain drains where they are needed, giving the water a place to go, and correcting whatever is delivering it there in the first place.

Because parts of Putnam are on municipal sewer and water rather than septic and wells, we also do a fair amount of connection and repair work: excavating and replacing failed laterals, digging for new connections, and repairing lines that have collapsed or root-intruded. That work is tightly coordinated with utility marking before anything opens up, and we treat that as non-negotiable.
