    Foundation Excavation in Northeast Connecticut

Accurate digging, clean bearing surfaces, and proper drainage and backfill for new homes, additions, garages, and slabs.

Foundation excavation is the part of a build where mistakes are the most expensive to undo. Everything above it — the footings, the walls, the framing, the finish work — depends on a hole that is in the right place, at the right depth, with a bottom that will actually carry the load. Once concrete is poured, a foundation that was dug an inch out of level or set on disturbed fill is not something you can quietly correct later. That is why we spend real time on layout and on checking grades as we go rather than digging fast and hoping.

The work starts with the plan and the site. We establish a benchmark, lay out the building corners, and work back from finish floor elevation to figure out how deep the excavation has to go, allowing for footing thickness, slab or crushed stone below, and frost depth. In Connecticut, footings generally need to bear below the frost line, and around here that means going deeper than people expect. We also look at where the spoil is going to go, how a concrete truck and a lumber delivery will get in, and whether the topsoil should be stockpiled on site for final grading later — those decisions are much cheaper to make before the first bucket comes out of the ground.

Then we dig. We strip and stockpile the topsoil separately from the subsoil, open the hole with enough over-dig to give the foundation crew safe room to set forms and later to waterproof and drain the wall, and bench or slope the sides as conditions require. The bottom is the part that matters most: we cut to grade rather than digging deep and filling back, because loose fill under a footing will settle. If we uncover something that will not bear — soft organics, an old dump area, a wet seam — we tell you and your builder immediately and dig it out rather than covering it up. Ledge is a real possibility in Northeast Connecticut, and if we hit it we will stop, show you what we are looking at, and talk through the options before any extra cost is incurred.

Once the concrete is placed and cured, we come back for the drainage and backfill. That normally means crushed stone and perimeter footing drain around the wall, tied to daylight where the grade allows or to a sump where it does not, then backfilling in lifts with suitable material so the wall is not shock-loaded and the ground will not settle into a trench along the house two years from now. We finish by rough grading the disturbed area so that the ground slopes away from the foundation on every side. Positive slope away from the building is the single cheapest piece of insurance against a wet basement, and it is surprising how often it gets skipped.

We work directly with your general contractor, foundation contractor, or engineer, and we are comfortable being the first trade on the site or coming in behind a clearing crew. If you are building yourself, we can walk you through the sequence and the inspections your town will want to see. What we will not do is guess at elevations, dig outside the staked footprint, or leave a bearing surface we would not build on ourselves.
